2015 Honda Pioneer 500 UTV

A first look at this Honda UTV

No, it’s not the high performance sport that many of you were hoping for, but the all-new Pioneer 500 is further proof that Honda is full steam ahead in the world of side-by-sides. Now that the Utility (Pioneer 700), and Sport Utility (Pioneer 500) classes are covered, we should expect a sportier rendition in only a few short months.

Designed by Honda R&D in Ohio, and built at Honda’s South Carolina plant, the Pioneer 500 is powered by a 475cc four-stroke engine. The same powerplant found in the recently revamped Foreman 500 (Full test in this issue). It's a fun-to-use powerband, with plenty of low-end torque to muscle around its 1000-pound chassis, and it’s operated by the UTV industry’s first electric shift system. This system utilizes the same five-speed gearbox with reverse, as the Foreman ATV, but is equipped with dual paddle shifters that are mounted to the steering column.

At only 50 inches wide, the Pioneer 500 fits on almost every ATV-restricted trail in the country, as well as in the bed of a full-size truck. Other thoughtful touches include a door/net setup that opens together as one unit, a roomy and comfortable bench seat for the driver and passenger and a ROPS (Roll Over Protection Structure)-approved cage that offers three-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seat belts for both driver and passenger. There’s also a full line of more than 40 Honda Genuine and Signature Accessories that allow owners to configure their Pioneer 500 to meet their specific needs right off the showroom floor.

The Pioneer 500 carries two people to off-road adventures, is perfect for chores on the farm or a relaxed trail ride out in the country and it’s packed with Honda’s famous quality and durability at a suggested retail price of only $8,499.
