Pit Posse Safety Wire Kit Review

Thrashed

Racing an ATV can be a very fun way to enjoy the weekend, and most will never have the first problem with their machines. This could be because they have prepared well, or possibly because lady luck was riding on their back. For some teams, however, the gremlins love to antagonize them, and if there is a way to keep them at bay, you better bet many teams have found it. During some of my longer rides the swingarm pivot bolt on my quad kept loosening up, allowing the bolt to come out. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how this could happen because I put the torque of a mule on that nut.

That's when I remembered the art of safety wire. This is no secret in the world of ATV riding—or of all motorsports, for that matter—but until you need it most of the time I don't think about it. Searching the Net I found a really cool kit by Pit Posse that included everything from the safety wire pliers and actual .32 gauge wire to the safety wire blocks used to drill super-small holes through the head of bolts and nuts. They even include the drill bits, all in a tough little plastic case. I was able to drill a hole through the pivot bolt nut and bolt, which allowed me to tie them together. This helped prevent the loosening of the nut, and if it were to loosen at all, it wouldn't get but maybe one-third of a turn. I was really impressed with the quality of the tools Pit Posse has to offer, and this little kit will be a life-/ride saver in my toolbox from now on. — Rick Sosebee
