Bluetooth helmet radios have been around for many years, used heavily by the cruiser street bike community, and have slowly worked their way into the helmets of ATV and UTV enthusiasts. It’s an absolute blast being able to ride the trail, listening to your favorite music, or keeping tabs on the rest of your riding group. For the past few months, we’ve been using a set of Sena SMH10 units installed in our custom Realtree-dipped Shoei Hornet-DS helmets ($510.99 plus paint). If you look closely, you’ll see these beautiful Realtree camouflage helmets throughout the pages and web posts of ATV Rider.
We used them for ATV testing but found that the 1,000-yard range isn’t great when you’re in the hills or through the trees. As a result, this ATV radio has become our go-to choice for testing UTVs. Connection is always spot-on for helmet to helmet, and the batteries last for more than 10 hours of talk time. As long as you have cell service, you can connect hands free to your mobile phone. It’s fun being able to speak to your passenger without having to scream over the engine noise or call your boss from your riding helmet to let him know you’re running late. Additional accessories are available such as the SM10 ($149), which allows multiple Bluetooth-equipped helmets to connect to a single audio source like your cell phone or GPS navigation, and the SR10 ($159), which allows you to connect multiple Bluetooth-equipped helmets to a handheld radio.
