Thrashed: HMF Competition Series Pipe

Product Review

HMF Competition Series Pipe
Excited about testing HMF's newest innovation, the Competition Series exhaust system, we ordered one up for our Kawasaki KFX450R. This new exhaust system was developed with "Trimax Core technology" which features adjustability between three levels of power and sound and is controlled via a trio of removable inserts. The inserts can be switched out in seconds by loosening four bolts with a 4mm Allen wrench, removing the billet-aluminum end-cap and switching out the inserts. The Stage 1 insert sets the decibel levels in the low to mid-90s while offering performance gains, Stage 2 steps both sound and power up with dB levels in the mid- to high 90s while the Stage 3 insert outputs the highest amount of both power and sound with decibel levels ranging from the high 90s to low 100s and drastically increasing power throughout the entire rpm range.

Mounting up the full system to our KFX was effortless, as everything lined up with perfection aside from the can being a little too long and exposed. The full system sells at the modest price of $525.95, and our Kawi (an EFI model) required HMF's preprogrammed EFI optimizer for an additional $249.95. With the Stage 1 insert installed, we cranked the KFX and were impressed with its quiet, yet aggressive tone. Although the performance was improved over stock, we felt the performance was a bit lazy. In addition, running with the Stage 1 insert for long periods of time is not recommended without adjusting the EFI mapping. Our disappointment did not last for long as the Stage 2 insert strengthened both the tone and bottom to midrange power, yet the sound levels remained moderate. The KFX really came to life with the Stage 3 insert, as it was noticeably louder (but not obnoxious) and unlocked tons of corked-up power spanning the entire rpm range. -Thad Josey
