2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew ZR2 4WD Review Gallery

A closer look at Chevy’s full-size off-road pickup.

With Ram and Ford having paved the way for hardcore off-road pickups that are still street-friendly, the clock was ticking and the pressure was on for GM to release an entrant of its own. After reasonable success with the midsize Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, Chevy turned its attention to the full-size Silverado and brought knowledge and the ZR2 name to the 1500-series truck. You can read our thoughts on the rig in our full review, and here we’re going to take a closer look at the finer details of Chevy’s first true offering in the red-hot off-road full-size pickup segment.

Black model-specific wheels are wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory M/T tires. They provide good off-road traction but howl endlessly on pavement.Ross Ballot
The Silverado’s bed offers good space for a big ATV like the 2022 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 Ride Command Edition, with the quad easily able to fit between the wheel wells.Ross Ballot
There’s good built-in protection so the quad doesn’t contact the rear glass.Ross Ballot
The Silverado ZR2 did admirably on our mock RTI test. With the differentials locked, it felt like it would have climbed all the way to the top despite leaning concerningly over on its side.Ross Ballot
The digital rearview camera is a nice touch but doesn’t help much when there’s a massive Polaris in the bed.Ross Ballot
These low-hanging shock mounts would prove problematic in many off-road situations, namely rock crawling.Ross Ballot
Once exclusive to high-performance sports cars, the “Flowtie” is now present on some of Chevy’s trucks. With the red lining, we can’t help but think it looks like lipstick.Ross Ballot
The underside of the ZR2 is heavily armored.Ross Ballot
The Multi-Flex tailgate has some interesting ideas, but feels overthought and under-engineered.Ross Ballot
Rock sliders offer decent rocker protection but zero help getting in or out of the truck.Ross Ballot
The back seat leaves a lot to be desired compared to those in crew cab Ram and Ford models.Ross Ballot
