Ford’s new electric Lightning pickup trades out gasoline propulsion for an electric battery and motors. Offered solely in SuperCrew configuration with the 5.5-foot bed and all-wheel drive, choices are limited to trim and power. The standard and extended batteries provide 230 or 300 miles of range on a charge, and either 426 hp and 775 pound-feet of torque or 563 hp and 775 pound-feet, respectively. Towing capacity is 10,000 pounds and payload is 2,000 pounds. A 15.5-inch touchscreen similar to that in the Mustang Mach E dominates the interior.
What really interests us is the Pro Power Onboard system, which builds on the F-150 Powerboost Hybrid’s strengths. This “generator” can discharge up to 2.4 kW from the base truck and up to 9.6 kW from higher trims. It can power a house in the event of a blackout, and its other potential uses are fascinating: Power tools. Air compressors. Portable welding equipment. Battery chargers/tenders. A grill or cooking station. Eventually, charging an electric UTV or ATV. Needless to say, we’re ecstatic to see what the Lightning’s party trick can be used for.
Ford’s F-150 Lightning Pro will start around $40,000. A fully optioned Platinum will approach $100,000. Production begins in May of 2022. Ford targets the upcoming Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV, and Tesla Cybertruck. Ford has made it clear that Lightning has a new meaning, and it promises to be a game changer.
