This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Best in the Desert Casey Folks Vegas to Reno race. Recognized as the longest point-to-point off-road race in the United States, V2R has racers leaving the starting line in Las Vegas to tackle 550 miles of rugged desert before reaching the checkered flag in Reno. This also marks the first year that three-wheeled ATCs will be allowed to run, and possibly have their own class. We reached out to Best in the Desert officials to find out what led to the inclusion of ATCs.
“The story behind the movement to race three-wheelers at Vegas to Reno is quite interesting,” Best in the Desert Marketing and Business Development Director Scot Harden said. “We were contacted by a gentleman named Christian Scholte about two months ago expressing interest in racing a three-wheeler at V2R. It was quite surprising, but Christian was very passionate about it. Race Operations Manager Jeff Phillips took the lead on this request and after determining that Christian was serious about this, explained that if we wanted to race a three-wheeler at Vegas to Reno, he could, but with only one entry he would have to compete in the quad class. Jeff further explained that it takes five entries to make a class and if Christian could find four other entries, we would make a class for them,” Harden said.
As of this writing, two more three-wheeler teams have committed to racing Vegas to Reno. ATV Rider will be heading to Las Vegas to complete full coverage of the ATC, ATV, and UTV classes and bring you a close prerace look at some of the three-wheeler builds that will be competing, including a custom 450cc three-wheeler built by TPC Trikes.
